Job: Master Carpenter – Over-hire

Job Details:

Reporting directly to the Fox Technical Director, the master carpenter is responsible for the construction, installation, and operation of scenery. Interested individuals should contact Technical Director, Brandon Case via email at with resume and any other pertinent information.

  • Constructs scenery and stage mechanics to the specifications of the production designer and Technical Director
  • Maintains and repairs scenery and stage mechanics
  • Assists rental clients with scenery as needed
  • Performs facility maintenance as needed
  • Participates in scenery needs for special events, festivals, performance services and marketing
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in technical theater or vocational degree in wood or steel working, mechanical engineering or similar field.

Experience: At least 3 years carpentry experience.  Professional experience is considered a greater necessity than formal education.

Knowledge: Knowledge of state of the art wood and steel working methods and machinery.

Abilities: Ability to ensure safety in all work spaces at all times.  Ability to work well with little supervision; ability to work successfully with minimal support staff; ability to work well with volunteers; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens; handle sensitive or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy; often works nights and weekends.

Skills: Strong woodworking and steel working skills both in framing and detail/trim.

Licenses, Certificates or Equipment Required:  Valid driver’s license with a good driving history.  This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.

Physical Demands: Very physical work depending on assignment; required regularly to lift and carry in excess of 50 pounds with or without assistance; requires  regular walking and standing; requires bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and climbing; hand/eye coordination for operation of tools and equipment; eye/hand/foot coordination for operation of motor vehicle; vision to read reports and manuals and other written material; speech to communicate and hearing to maintain safe work environment.

Work Environment: Works primarily in loud, dusty environment with exposure to heavy machinery, electricity, ladders, and tight and confined spaces.  Occasionally works in low light conditions.  Occasional exposure to chemicals, firearms and open flame.

Equipment Used: Heavy wood working and steel working machinery, specialized stage lighting equipment, hydraulics, and electric motors.
