ABOUT THE SHOW:

Rage! Sex! Betrayal! Bloody murder! In the heat of late summer 1892, Andrew Borden and his wife are found murdered in their house. The prime suspect is Andrew’s youngest daughter from a previous marriage, Lizzie Borden. Based on historical records, LIZZIE explores the heated days leading up to the murders and the trial’s controversial outcome. With a cast of four powerful women, a dynamic six-piece band, and a soundtrack inspired by the music of Bikini Kill, The Runaways, and Heart, LIZZIE is a fierce and captivating experience, blending raw emotion and historical intrigue with a pulse-pounding musical score.

LIZZIE contains strong language, mature themes, sexual content, depictions of violence, and references to child abuse. As such, all cast members must be at least 18 years old when rehearsals begin.

Email Jen at JOrf@auroragov.org if you wish to read a perusal script.

REHEARSALS:

Rehearsals begin on or around Sept. 8 and run five days a week: weekdays from 6-10 p.m., weekend hours TBD.

A NOTE ON CASTING FROM THE DIRECTOR:

LIZZIE is a murder ballad, a legend, and a punk requiem—not a historical reenactment. Actors of all races, ethnicities, body types, and abilities are wholeheartedly welcome to audition. Auditions are welcome from all actors who portray women onstage.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:

Lizzie Borden
20s to 30s
Mezzo soprano (F#3-F#5 with a high mix-belt or scream-belt to A5)
Our anti-heroine Lizzie is both a tragic victim and a terrifying culprit. She’s a brooding social outcast and a magnetic celebrity. She expertly wields charisma and charm, and she knows just what people want to hear.

Emma Borden
30s to 40s
Alto/Mezzo belt (F#3-D5 with the ability to growl and rasp)
Ten years older than Lizzie, Emma is an outspoken and protective older sister/maternal figure. She’s realistic, grounded, and fiercely loyal. Emma resents her father and despises his second wife.

Alice Russell
20s to 30s
Soprano (G3-A5 with F#3 ghost notes in one song)
The sweet girl-next-door, Alice is caring, tender, and utterly in love with Lizzie. She might not be equipped to handle the real Lizzie, but beneath Alice’s innocence lies a romantic and seductive passion.

Bridget “Maggie” Sullivan
20s to 50s
Contralto/Alto (F3-E5 with E3 ghost notes in one song)
Occasionally serving as the narrator of our story, Bridget is the Bordens’ witty and sarcastic housemaid. Although she’s often disrespected by her employers, she is bold and outspoken, with a cheeky sense of humor. [Speaks in an Irish dialect — see note in Preparation section.]
